September 5, 2018
Welcome to the 2018 – 2019 academic year! Our teachers and staff are so excited and looking forward to a great year filled with rich learning experiences for your child. Our focus is on providing each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience.
There are many dedicated professionals at Wagner who are committed to ensuring your child’s success. Over the years, as both a teacher and an administrator, I have been asked by families what they can do to help support the school’s efforts. Some things that you can do include:
- Help your child set up a homework location and schedule. Research has shown that students who diligently complete homework are consistently successful. Students are expected to complete homework and read for a minimum of 45 minutes. Additionally, a Wagner planner is a great organization tool and can be purchased from your child’s homeroom teacher for $7.00. Be sure to read the family handbook with your child that is included in your Welcome Folder. Create your child’s schedule and help them stick to it.
- Attend curriculum night on Thursday, September 20th, 4:30-7:30 PM. During this evening you will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers, guidance counselor and assistant principal. At this time, teachers will explain their class expectations, homework policies and provide additional ways for you to support your child’s learning.
- For those of you who are new to the school, we have an exceptional Parents’ Association! Come to the first Parents’ Association meeting on Friday, September 28th at 8:45am, to learn how you can become involved.
As we begin the year, please remember that this is your school and we welcome your involvement. Remember that we are here to help. The staff at Wagner Middle School is committed to providing your child with the best education and will do everything possible to make your experience at Wagner Middle School a positive one. Although I want to make myself available to you, my first priority is to the students and the staff when they are in the building. For this reason, the best time to get in touch with school administration is before 8 AM or after 3:15 PM. Unless it is an emergency, we generally do not return phone calls until after 3:15 PM.
For those families who use the internet regularly, email our school’s parent coordinator, Sheila Gonzalez-Liffey, (firstname.lastname@example.org), to join our school’s listserv. Once signed up, notices and announcements that are sent home via backpack mail, will be automatically e-mailed to you. Please also regularly check our school website at www.wagner167.org for important information including daily announcements, letters from assistant principals, etc.
I look forward to working with you and your child. It is going to be a great year!
