6th Grade Accelerated Math
Dear Incoming 6th Grade Families,
We are excited to welcome you to Wagner’s Class of 2025!
Students in Wagner’s Class of 2025 will have the opportunity to qualify for an accelerated 6th-grade math course for the 2022-2023 school year. Students who are selected for this course will receive an accelerated mathematics curriculum. Students who do not place into the accelerated course, will receive the 6th-grade core math curriculum. All students in both the accelerated and core tracks will be prepared for and expected to take the NYS Math Assessment that is administered in the spring of 6th grade.
We have explored different curricula choices that best support this shift in our math program and have selected the Illustrative Mathematics accelerated curriculum for implementation in the 2022-2023 school year.
Please know that at the end of 6th grade, all students will again go through a selection process for the accelerated 7th grade math course. Placement in accelerated math for 6th grade does not guarantee placement in the 7th grade accelerated math or our Regents Algebra course in 8th grade.
In order to be considered for the 6th grade accelerated math course, students will need to take a placement assessment. Placement assessments are in-person at Wagner Middle School. More information on placement assessments can be found on the back of this letter.
Please know that students will receive their class placements in September, prior to the 2022-2023 school year. Class placements are not available over the summer.
The above outlines our expected accelerated course offerings for 6th graders for the 2022-2023 school year. If changes are required by budgetary considerations or other unforeseen circumstances, we will update families.
